Our Mission

Hair.  Black Women.  Expert Advice

Today’s Black woman and her hair. Grow it or cut it. Straighten or curl it. Braid or weave it. Lock or twist it. Natural and kinky vs. chemically relaxed. The options are numerous and possibilities endless. The bottom line is style it, somehow.

As women of color our hair textures are as varied as our skin tones. If you have wavy, frizzy, nappy, kinky, fluffy, thick, coarse, or kinky hair Straight 2 the Root has you in mind. At Straight To The Root healthy hair is our obsession. Whether you like it bouncin’-and-behavin’, long and flowing, big and bold, short and chic- whatever your hairstyle preference, it’s all good. There are no judgments here only support, information and options and more importantly community.

As a black woman myself I know the struggle. I understand the effort, the challenges, the time and money spent on styling our hair. And many times even the pain involved in achieving that perfect “do”. For black women hair is a very significant part of our identity and self-esteem. When it comes to African- Americans and hair there’s a rich history and culture that needs to be acknowledged.

Whenever African-American women thumb through the pages of the popular fashion magazines the hairstyling advice often doesn’t apply to black women who have coarser, kinkier hair textures. I’ve also observed a general lack of education among black women when it comes to properly caring for their tresses. Add to that the long-standing myths about hair that have been handed down for generations. Some are downright ridiculous and even hilarious!
Several hair care traditions still being practiced down to this day get their roots from as far back as the days of slavery!

I have a couple of decade’s worth of experience under my belt as a professional cosmetologist/ hairstylist. During my career I have worked with all ethnicities of clientele. One thing I’ve learned firsthand is that within every ethnic group there are a variety of hair textures. More interestingly there are extremely different approaches in hair care and styling methods among different cultural groups.
Now as a celebrity hairstylist in New York City I will also share with you behind-the- scenes moments from my exciting and interesting television and print work.

Most of African-American women I come in contact with want to know

“How can I grow and maintain healthy tresses?”

“What can I do to get my hair to grow?”

“ What products are right for black hair?”

Still others do not understand the typical bad hair habits that are damaging their hair.

Straight 2 the Root aims to get right down to the heart of the hair issues that concern women of color. You’ll finally be able to:

Increasing numbers of young black girls are interested in the best hair weave methods or the increasingly popular lace front wigs. Pop culture icons like Tyra Banks and Beyonce even acknowledge that they rock the fabulous and flowing lace front wigs.

There are tons of sites on the web about hair and hairstyling. Many sites even cater specifically to “curly” hair. As I hear the same problems and questions over and over from so many of my sisters I began to realize something. There’s a real and huge void for useful, practical information about hair care geared directly to black women and by someone who not only “gets it” but who is also an expert with proven hair care methods that work.
A licensed, hairstylist who has special expertise in and passionate about good hair advice for ethnic hair types founded this site. Straight To The Root is dedicated to all things hair, for all women of color around the globe.

You’ll get the truth, facts and the real deal here. We’ll get Straight To The Root.
